Doggy Day Care at the Willows
When temperatures start to soar, it can be hard to find dog-friendly outings in warm weather. So, what are the dog-friendly activities you can do in the summertime? We’ve shared some ideas and tips to help you keep your canine companion cool, happy and healthy.
Remember, it’s important to know how to care for your dog in hot weather. As a dog sweats through its paws and loses heat through panting, they have a high risk of heat stroke. If you want your dog to stay well, then provide them with plenty of shade and clean, cold water.
What temperature is dangerous for dogs outside?
According to the RSPCA, if you take a dog out in a car, the outside temperature might be 22°C but the inside temperature could be 47°C. Pavements and sand can become scorching too, so bear in mind your doggy’s sensitive paws could increase their body temperature. Put your hand on the ground for 5 seconds and if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your dog! A dog’s ability to cool down by panting can even be affected by humidity on an overcast day.
Before we look at suitable activities, please check this outdoor temperature chart provided by the Oxfordshire Animal Sanctuary.
- 32°C and above: High risk of heat stroke, regardless of the dog’s breed or size.
- 28-31°C: Very dangerous for ALL dogs and life-threatening for puppies, larger breeds, and dogs that are obese or have flat faces.
- 24-27°C: Extreme caution for puppies, larger breeds, and dogs that are obese or have flat faces, as they could struggle in this temperature range.
- 20-23°C: There are heat stroke risks within this range if your dog has vigorous exercise or existing health issues, such as breathing difficulties or obesity.
- 16-19°C: This is a safe range to exercise dogs, but it’s still worthwhile being cautious with breeds that are flat-faced, larger or heavier.
- 12-15°C: No risk of heat stroke, so go ahead and walk your furry friend!
What activities can I do with my dog in summer?
Below are a few ideas for summer activities, bearing in mind the above temperature chart and whether you need to transport your dog. If you must travel by car, then always make sure the AC has been running for a few mins so that your car is cool enough for your dog.
- Woodland parks – if the temperature is 19°C or below, then you could take your doggy to a nearby wood with plenty of cool grass for them to run on. They can then rest under a shady tree if they get too hot. However, remember that some breeds (see above chart) will need gentle walking. Always keep an eye on the temperature.
- Early morning or late evening walks – you may need to change your walking time in the summer to early morning or late evenings when it’s cooler. Never run or cycle alongside your dog in hot weather.
- Indoor fun – when it’s too hot then the best approach is to keep doggies safe inside by providing them with mental enrichment instead. Kongs, snuffle mats, and hiding treats or toys in fun places will give your dog lots of stimulating activities. Keep them cool with damp towels to lie on and ice cubes in water bowls – or freeze your Kong!
