Choosing the right dog breedWhen it comes to choosing the right dog breed, there are lots of important things to consider. From size to temperament to energy levels, every breed has its own set of characteristics. Let’s take a look at some factors you need to be aware of if you’re thinking of getting a dog.

Size matters

The size of your dog needs to match your family situation and the size of your home. Imagine them running around your living spaces. If you have children, do you want them to be able to walk the dog? A powerful breed like a German Shepherd might be too strong to be walked by smaller children. As well as size, different breeds have varying builds, which could mean that a medium-sized dog requires more human strength when walking.

Temperament

Dog breeds vary in terms of temperament. Golden Retrievers, Cockerpoos and Labradoodles are incredibly friendly, making them ideal for families. Some breeds don’t enjoy being cuddled, while others are highly affectionate. Make sure you research all the different characteristics to ensure you pick the right dog for you.

Energy levels

Every dog needs to be walked but some breeds are more active and energetic than others. Some dogs need a couple of hours of exercise each day, while other breeds only need a short 20-minute walk. Border Collies and Huskies, for example, require a lot of physical activity. Springer Spaniels, Jack Russell Terriers and Cocker Spaniels are very energetic in terms of play and mental stimulation and may require a lot of your attention.

Grooming needs

Before you choose a dog, it’s important to learn the level of grooming care required. Certain breeds like short-haired Dachshunds and Beagles don’t need to be groomed. However, dogs such as Schnauzers and Poodles might need grooming every 4 – 6 weeks. Some breeds shed very little hair, such as Bichon Frise, making them ideal for anyone with allergies.

Consider a rescue dog

Dog rescue centres are full across the country, so we would always urge people to consider rehoming a dog before buying from a breeder. Rescue dogs are more suited to those with previous experience in owning a dog. Depending on the dog’s background, some rescues can have behavioural issues; you’ll need patience and a good level of canine knowledge. However, if you prefer to buy from a dog breeder, check The Kennel Club’s directory.

Doggy Day Care Services

At Doggy Daycare at the Willows, we always recommend obtaining a dog as ethically as possible. Always do your research when you are looking at different dog breeds to ensure you have the right size, temperament and characteristics for your situation.

The RSPCA advises that you shouldn’t leave your dog alone for more than four hours a day. Otherwise, this can cause your dog to feel distressed, which could result in negative or destructive behaviours. Dogs are highly sociable animals that need to feel as if they are part of a ‘pack’. So, consider using a doggy day care service when you’re out all day.

Our Doggy Daycare Assistants will closely supervise your dog all day long! Your furry friend can play and rest within our safe and secure facilities, alongside other dogs of a similar size and temperament. Your dog can play outdoors or snooze inside our temperature-controlled building. We have a five-star licence with Blaby Council, and on-site dog grooming.
